What's in your water

Chlorine taste and smell

The swimming-pool smell. The one thing every filter jug ever made will fix.

Filter jugs handle this well

Chlorine is in your water on purpose — it is the reason the supply is safe — and it is added at the treatment works, so how much you can smell depends largely on how far you live from one. Activated carbon adsorbs it readily, which is why this is the single claim every cartridge on the market can make honestly, from the most expensive to the cheapest generic. If chlorine taste is your only complaint, buy on price and convenience.

How you know you have it

  • A swimming-pool smell from the cold tap, strongest first thing in the morning
  • Tea and coffee that taste flat or chemical
  • Water that tastes fine cold from the fridge and unpleasant at room temperature

What works

Everything. Any activated carbon cartridge, including the cheapest third-party ones.

What does not

Nothing much — this is the easy case. A cartridge left in past its life will stop working, and an old cartridge left standing in warm water can make the taste worse rather than better.

Cartridges that reduce chlorine taste

Ordered by strength of evidence, not by brand. An independently certified claim outranks a lab-tested one, which outranks a manufacturer’s word for it.
