The LifeStraw Home jug uses two separate replaceable parts and it matters that you understand which is which. The hollow-fibre membrane is the part that stops bacteria and parasites, and it runs for around 1,000 gallons. The carbon and ion exchange stage handles lead, PFAS, chlorine and mercury, and needs replacing far more often. Ordering the wrong one is the commonest complaint about the product.

What it removes — and what it does not

Does not reduce
Listed because it is the more useful half. Every cartridge on the market reduces chlorine taste; what separates them is what they leave behind.
Tested to the method of a named standard, usually by an independent laboratory, but not certified — no ongoing audit, no published listing with the certifying body. Better than nothing, weaker than certification, and routinely presented as though it were the same thing.
Tested to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 401 and P231 protocols by independent laboratories. P231 is the microbiological protocol and is the reason this jug can make a bacteria claim at all — no ordinary carbon jug can.
